SneakersbeShops CURATES: Utilitarian

The SneakersbeShops Curates: Utilitarian edit represents an exploration into form and function, both of the garments themselves and the environments they inhabit.

At the core of utilitarian design is a balance between form and function — garments that can be worn in myriad environments, with an emphasis on practicality that grows better with age. Much like these garments, the neighbouring coastlines and urban environments of the North East share direct synergy, beautiful in their forms, yet equally gritty and raw in elements: unkept brickwork, rusted metals and chain link fences. It’s this visceral contrast that underpins the SneakersbeShops Curates: Utilitarian edit, showcasing the symbiosis of aesthetics and ruggedness shared by both garment and environment.

At the centre of the edit is an emphasis on performance, with GORE-TEX offerings from Eichiro Homma’s nanamica, down-filled layers from C.P. Company and Goldwin and rugged footwear from ROA. Washed out textures further nod to the hardwearing nature of both environment and garment, with an overdyed purple hoodie from thisisneverthat and a light brown, washed canvas jacket by Auralee.

Experimenting with patterns and texture, the Bodhi patchwork jacket from Kardo exemplifies the Indian label’s love of craft textiles, while cargo pants from thisisneverthat are detailed with an all-over woodland camo. Accessories, meanwhile, reflect the utilitarian theme of the edit, with a down filled trapper cap from Hiking Patrol, a 3D Seamless Neck Gaiter from ROA and an ergonomic, water repellent cross body bag from Cote&Ciel.
